The belt ranking system has not always been in place. The first use of the ranking system was in 1883 by a Judo master. Even then there were only 2; black to signify 2 of his students who had achieved the first “Dan”, and white for those students who had not.
Since then the system has been adopted by most forms of martial arts around the world. While the belt system is a valuable tool to measure progression and ability, remember, the only difference between a black belt and a white belt… is practice…..
